Contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence – Ontario.
The licence lets anyone copy, adapt and redistribute these records, including commercially, on one condition: that the attribution above is shown. It is shown on every well record in the apps, and here. The licence is granted by the Government of Ontario to everyone, not to us — if you want the records themselves, take them from the catalogue link above under that same licence. You do not need our permission.
What is removed before the records reach the app
Public does not mean republishable. These columns are dropped during import, not hidden in the interface, so they never reach a server the apps talk to:
- Owner name — the item Ontario itself withholds under FIPPA.
- Street address — a civic address beside a precise coordinate identifies a household.
- Site description — uncontrolled free text that can describe a private property and cannot be reviewed row by row.
- Contractor licence number — it identifies an individual licensee and no feature needs it.
- Free-text comment columns, as a class.
Coordinates, lot and concession and municipality are kept. Ontario publishes the same coordinates on its own public map, the record describes a structure rather than a person, and no name survives the import to join a coordinate to.
Known limitations
The publisher's own use limitation, quoted from the dataset's metadata record:
There are inaccuracies in terms of location and other information. Some of the inaccuracies are inherited directly from the person who completed and submitted the well record. Inaccuracies may also be introduced during data entry.
What the import measured, from the source review of release 2026a:
- Only 3,307 of 1,022,416 records — about 0.3% of Ontario records have a location measured to within 10 m. The strictest accuracy class alone accounts for 825 records.
- 200,977 records carry an unknown location accuracy.
- 51,300 records have no coordinates at all and never appear on the map.
- 647 records fall outside Ontario. They are flagged, not removed — the app does not quietly delete rows from a government record.
- Depth to bedrock comes from the published GIS layer rather than the database release, where that column is empty.
- Records include wells constructed from 1899 onward; most were received after the 1940s.
- Free-text comments are never shown, because they are never imported.
Found something wrong in a record?
WellAtlas does not edit government records, so a correction has to be made at the source. If a record is wrong, report it to the Government of Ontario through the dataset's catalogue page; corrections reach the app with the next dataset release. If the app is showing a record differently from the source, that is ours — tell us.
